The Winners
The judging of the Code Afloat competition entries took place during February 2018 and after much deliberation two winners have been chosen. Unfortunately the quality of entries in the “Best Ideas” section of the competition was not great and the decision was taken to not award any prizes in this section.
However in the “Best Applications” section there were a number of apps that stood out and the decision was taken to award a first prize and an additional second place prize in this section.
So the winners are:-
1st place in Best Applications Section
Steve Bennett from Pocket Mariner in the United Kingdom for his iKommunicate Alexa Skill. The judges particularly liked the secure connection that Steve created over a 3G/4G network that allowed Alexa to query iKommunicate onboard the boat and return navigational and environmental data. The Alexa Skill is fully working and tested and has been submitted to Amazon for approval.
2nd place in Best Applications Section
Thomas St Pierre from Canada for his “KIP” web app as a low cost MFD alternative. The judges liked the well thought out and easy to setup web app, that combined clear modern displays with info graphics showing trends and history. This was Thomas’ first Javascript marine app and he has fully embraced the Signal K ethos and made all of the code open source.
Congratulations to both winners and we hope that your apps will encourage more people to start benefiting from using Signal K on their boat.
